In human society and its environment (HSIE), the subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10, where students study specific historical and geographical concepts and skills.
In HSIE, students explore varied subjects in human society and its environment to learn about history, geography, people, societies and culture.
Students also have an opportunity to learn more about people and the societies and environments in which they live through elective subjects.
A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:
- research, gather and analyse information
- question and make judgements
- write for a variety of purposes.
The HSIE syllabus reflects students' experiences and offers insights into different times and places. By engaging with various evidence from the past and geographical data, students learn essential skills to situate themselves and others in time and space. They explore Australian identity and civic responsibilities foundational to a democratic society. We incorporate this learning with hands on learning experiences that include excursions to local landmarks, connecting students with the history of our local environment.
Students also learn about Aboriginal Cultures and Histories, gaining knowledge of the oldest living cultures and sustainable practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. This understanding fosters a connection to Country and Place. Our students develop a deep understanding and appreciation of Dharawal land and the Wodi Wodi people.
Overall, HSIE guides students to navigate the dynamic world, appreciate diverse cultures, and develop critical and creative thinking skills, encouraging them to contribute to a socially just and sustainable future.
