Creative arts is mandatory for students from Kindergarten to Year 6.
In creative arts, students discover a variety of art forms through a study of dance, drama, music and visual arts where they learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make and perform.
Each art form has its own unique knowledge and skills, elements or concepts as well as a capacity to inspire and enrich lives.

Music Programs
We offer two ways for our students to engage in music. The first sees our classroom teachers explore the concepts of music by engaging with the content from the K-6 Creative Arts syllabus. Students explore musical instruments, tuned and untuned, create their own instruments, experiement with beat, tempo, volume and pitch. and of course sing. This teaching and learning is enhanced as teachers undertake professional development to sharpen their skills and learn new ones as we implement the new syllabus.
A withdrawal music program for interested students is also offered by Cool Kids Music. This program provides the opportunity for students to learn an instrument under the guidance of the instructors from Cool Kids Music. This is additional to the classroom music lessons that are taught to every child. Please see our office staff or visit the Cool Kids Music website if you would like to enrol your child in this program.

Visual Arts
Students are encouraged to shine and be creative in this space. They discover new techniques by making, appreciating and exhibiting artworks of varied forms. Students explore a range of techniques for creating artworks including painting, printing, drawing, sculpting, digital and mixed media. To extend their artistic knowledge we engage in the study of a variety of artists and utilise their techniques to refine and develop visual arts skills. Students in years 5 and 6 are afforded the opportunity to showcase their skills in the Keira Community of Schools Keirabald Art Exhibition. This exhibition sees selected artworks displayed at The Contemporary Art Space in Wollongong, with prizes awarded to the top artists in each category. This is an initiative is hosted and organised by the staff at Keira High School.
Drama
Our students are taught the skills needed to perform for a range of audiences for a variety of purposes. They explore their dramatic style and how to work creatively with others to create performances that convey a message. The skills learnt in drama lessons are transferable to other areas of learning such as English, where students are required to speak in front of an audience. These skills are also helpful to students who engage in the Tournament of Minds and Game Changers competitions. All students are given the opportunity to showcase these skills in our yearly Twilight Concert.
Dance
Dance plays an integral part in developing students' coordination and teamwork. It allows them to respond creatively to music and is an avenue for self expression. Classroom teachers teach students to respond through dance to a variety of stimuli. Students reflect on the movements of dancers to appreciate movement quality and apply this to their self composed dance routines. Our students are afforded the opportunity to highlight their passion for dance and performance at the Southern Stars concerts held in August each year.
