Connection

Mount Ousley Public School builds student connections through a Kindergarten–Year 6 buddy program and Wellbeing Crews, which foster community and teamwork. Families are engaged as partners through regular events and open communication. The school connects with the wider community through excursions and digital updates, collaborates with local schools for learning opportunities, and supports students in their transition to high school, including selective school pathways.

Students

Connection for our students begins during Kindergarten orientation, where they are first introduced to their Year 6 buddy. This Year 6 student helps them build friendships, plays games with them, and assists them with anything they may need as they enter ‘big school’ for the first time. Through this program, we see our Kindergarten and Year 6 students form a very special bond that strengthens throughout the year.

Students develop a strong sense of belonging through their connections with others across year levels via our Wellbeing Crews. These Crews are reimagined ‘sporting houses’ designed to bring students together for learning activities, special occasions, and to foster team spirit during sporting and fundraising events. Student leaders of each Crew organise a fundraising event each term to benefit a national or local charity, helping to build a sense of community and connectedness.

Families

The strong relationships our school has with parents and carers are built on mutual respect, kindness, and a shared vision for the learning and wellbeing of our students. Parents are partners in their child’s learning journey. We take the time to meet all families at the beginning of each school year and engage in informal conversations at afternoon pick-up. Throughout the year, parents, carers, and extended families are invited to attend school events such as Harmony Day, the Easter Hat Parade, fortnightly assemblies, the Book Week Parade, and our annual Twilight Concert. In addition to whole-school events, parents and carers participate in discussions with teachers about their child’s learning at parent-teacher interviews in Term 1 and at Student-Led Conferences in Term 3.

Community

The students and staff at Mount Ousley Public School connect with the wider community in many diverse ways. We share learning highlights, student successes, and school events through our fortnightly podcast, school Facebook page, and newsletter.

Our teachers enhance student learning through excursions to the local Environmental Education Centre, the University of Wollongong, and Science Space.

Schools

As part of the Keira Community of Schools, we work closely with Keira High School, Fairy Meadow Demonstration School, Wollongong Public, Coniston Public, Pleasant Heights Public, and Balgownie Public to build teacher knowledge and practices and enhance student learning.

Our students join peers from across the Keira Community of Schools to participate in The Excelsior Cup — a STEM-based challenge hosted by Keira High School.

Our ongoing collaboration and strong transition programs ensure our students are well-prepared for a successful transition to high school. Our Year 6 students thrive as they move from primary to secondary education.

Beyond our Community of Schools, we support students as they apply, audition, and sit entrance exams for local selective NSW public high schools. Our students are well represented in the intake of these schools each year.
